Coastal Navigation

This course is designed to help you navigate within sight of land in coastal waters.

Topics covered are:
1. Symbols and conventions for Hydrographic Charts
2. Applicable Rules of the Road
3.
Pluses and minuses of different types of necessary navigation equipment.
4. Purposes and information in all the government publications.
5. Thorough coverage of the use of Tide and Current Tables.
6. An understanding of compass errors.
7. Creation of a deviation card for a compass
8. Plotting of a dead reckoning position.
9. Calculating and adjusting for a tidal set and drift
10. Five different methods of determining your position.
11. Navigation in reduced visibility (depth sounder navigation)

Cost for the 10 week course which begins Tuesday, February 12, 2008 is $209.00.

Each course consists of:

  • Notes relating to the course
  • Charts and excerpts from other publications
  • Questions relating to the Lectures and Notes.
  • Answers to the above questions.
  • An ASA/CYA Certified exam.


Course will run for 10 consecutive weeks. The course costs include 1) the notes, 2) the right to sit the exam, 3) the certification upon successful completion, 4) as much phone time as you need with trouble spots. You will need Parallel Rules and Dividers for the class.
