Weather For The Mariner
We are very excited about this course. It will be 5 weeks in length, one
night a week, starting Wednesday, January 23, 2008. The course will be held on
3 consecutive Wednesday evenings (January 23, January 30 & February 6) followed
by two Monday evenings (February 11 & February 18). The classes will be
from 7 to 10 in the evening and will be held at our regular classroom space at

5. Small scale and Mesoscale Weather.

9. Weather Planning and Routing for Voyages.
The following is an abbreviated list of the exercises that will be covered.
1. Plot data and analyze a weather map.
2. Compute wind estimates from the surface pressure chart.
3. Compute average and maximum wave heights off a surface chart.
4. Strategies for hurricane hazard avoidance.
5. Determining hazards around thunderstorms.
6. Diagnosing wind flow around lakes.
7. Creating a weather chart from radio, verbal reports.
8. Perform an optimum planning/ routing exercise from weather charts and text
products.
