Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103)

This course is designed for people who wish to be able to bareboat charter boats in Colorado, the Virgin Islands, the Pacific Northwest or any other sailing destination. The course is 18 hours in length.  It consists of 3 three hour Theory Sessions and 3 three hour Practical Sessions on the water.  If you do not know how to "Head Up", "bear Away", "Tack" & "Gybe", you will need to start with the Basic Keelboat course.

NOTE: If you are taking both the Basic Keelboat Sailing course and the Basic Coastal Cruising course, you will be taking a total of 3 - three hour Theory classes and 6 Practical Sessions.

The course includes three (3) Hour Dry Land Theory Sessions. Subjects include:

  • Duties of the Skipper and Crew
  • Chart Reading
  • Anchoring
  • Tides and Currents
  • Preparing for the Sea
  • Hypothermia
  • Final Exam (ASA Certification available upon request).

The course also includes three (3) Hour Practical Sessions on the Water. Topics include:

Materials provided are:

  • Textbook (Sailing Fundamentals by Gary Jobson)
  • Charts & Color Handouts explaining buoy positioning
  • Safety gear for use during on the water sessions
